Travel Tip: Traveling with kids? It’s all about the snacks!

My son Rocco's snack stash on his last trip: raisins, Buddy Fruits bites, Buddy Fruits pouch, crackers, Pirate's Booty, Fruit Snacks, m&ms, and Goldfish
Traveling with Kids? Be sure to pack plenty of snacks to keep tummies full and hands busy. Not to say our bags aren’t also packed with an iPad, LeapPad, toys, crayons, headphones, lovie blankets, and whatever else I can think of that can preoccupy my 3 year old for at least a minute. But snacks, especially those with many pieces, can be quite entertaining and just as much fun as all the other stuff. Plus, if they aren’t hungry, they aren’t as cranky. So load up those carry-ons (or their own backpacks) with the snacks…and just when you think you have enough, add another. Then hide them down in the bottom where the little stinker can’t find them. Then, when they start screaming in the middle of that 5 hour flight and have already played with every last toy, those snacks will be the perfect new distraction. It’s amazing how a little bag of m&ms can turn a frown upside down. It still works for me!
Travel Tip: Request Hold Mail
Leaving town for more than a couple of days? Request Hold Mail through your local post office and they will hold your mail until you return. Better yet, schedule the mail to be dropped off by the mailman the day after you get back so you don’t arrive home to a mound of mail. This can all be easily done online at USPS.com up to the very last minute (2 a.m. on the day you leave to be exact). Nothing says “nobody’s home” more than an overflowing mailbox.
Travel Tip: Pack Yourself First, Mommy
In typical mom fashion, I always put the rest of the family first and pack everyone else up for vacation before even getting my suitcase out of the closet. This past weekend, I learned why this is a terrible idea…when I forgot my shirt…for my anniversary dinner. Sigh. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal. I’ll just wear another shirt. Only we were going away for a casual beach weekend and I only needed to pack one nice shirt…which I left on my bed. So, my advice this week is to pack up yourself first, Mommy, when energy is high and you have time to think things through. Also, remember that Master Packing List I suggested? Use it. Not sure about the rest of you but if this Mommy isn’t organized and pulled together, everyone else’s day is in trouble. So in this case, you come first. Besides, there’s no chance you’ll forget the kid’s diapers, favorite spiderman t-shirt, or lovie.
As soon as you put your bags down in your hotel room (or your bellman does), take a look around and see if there is anything you need the front desk to help you with and call them right away. Whether you need more towels, need to have a light bulb changed, or (god forbid) have a plumbing problem, make the request immediately with the front desk and then head out on your adventures. This way when you return, everything will be to your liking and you won’t have to wait around for assistance before rushing off to dinner or the theater or wherever the night takes you.
