Travel Journal: Naples Grande Beach Resort
A few weeks ago, my husband, Joe, and I had a much needed night away, just the two of us. With his busy work schedule, a work ethic stronger than anyone I’ve ever known, and now that he owns his own business, it’s not often that he takes time off. Maybe being your own boss isn’t ALWAYS a dream come true? So when we do both travel, it’s usually for a week or so at a time and with our best travel partner, our 2 year old son, Rocco. But this time, we made an exception and treated ourselves to a night alone. We have been planning a weekend away for some time and our last plan to head to the W Fort Lauderdale fell through because of sickness a few weeks earlier. So, when we saw a great deal at the Naples Grande Beach Resort and found out Joe’s sister (who lives nearby) was available to babysit for the night, we jumped on the opportunity.
It’s a Waldorf Astoria Resort and a full-service destination resort so we knew it would be in good hands. As we drove up, the entrance was lined with beautifully manicured hedges and had a clean modern look. The lobby was even more modern and included the restaurant Aura, the bar & lounge, the entrance to the renowned Golden Door Spa, and a small hotel boutique with cute cuff bracelets and yummy ginger ale in old fashioned glass bottles. As we waited for our room, we ventured off to the pool where we quickly snatched up two lounge chairs, whipped out our magazines (mine Marie Clare and Joe actually read his Wired on the iPad), spritzed the sunscreen, and ordered cocktails. In seconds, it was like we fell back into our newlywed couple life that we once lived on Miami Beach…and it felt so good. Once the fresh blueberry lemonade arrived, I was blissful.
We were practically giddy that we had this time together, just us. We headed out to the Venician Village where we happened upon a great store called J.Mclaughlin. They had so many tote bags I would love to own that you may just see them soon at our e-boutique! Next we headed to Miramare, a restaurant with an outdoor terrace over looking the waterway which truly made you feel as if you were in Venice. We had just missed a visit from the local dolphins but it didn’t matter because the view was all anyone needed. The food was actually tasty too. Often times I find when you wander into a random place you haven’t heard of and the atmosphere is gorgeous, you shouldn’t expect much more…but here we were pleasantly surprised with out rigatoni eggplant and chicken parm.
After our bellies were full, we headed back for a much needed nap and then took the tram out to the beach to catch the sunset on their 3 miles of white sand beach. When was the last time I saw that? Had I ever seen the sunset at the beach?
Obviously, not on the east coast of Florida! We then dipped our feet poolside for a few minutes before heading up for showers before our dinner reservation…which we made the mistake of pushing back to 9pm. We found out in Naples most restaurants close at 10pm, for the silver-haired set. We knew Naples was an older crowd but didn’t realize just how much older until we were there…we were probably the youngest by 10 years…and I wouldn’t say we’re “young” anymore. Nevermind our age though, young at heart, right?
So, these two parents who rarely have 5 min to themselves, weren’t sure what to do when we were dressed and ready to go come 8:30pm. So we took our chances and headed down to Strip House, the hotel’s steak house which opened there in 2007. We knew we were dining here as soon as we booked the reservation at the Naples Grande as we had eaten several times at the Strip House in NYC when we lived there. What a good choice that was…they said no problem when we showed up half an hour early for our reservation and sat us immediately. The service was superb and my New York Strip was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. We also had to try out the 24 layer wall of a chocolate cake but it honestly looked more impressive than it tasted. But what I think stole my heart was the Potatoes Romanoff. I had never had them before but had heard about the “Strip House Potatoes Romanoff” on the Today Show and had to experience them for myself. Divine! Our evening ended with a rental of Horrible Bosses which I loved! That Jason Batemen gets me every time…hysterical. Then we passed out of food coma.
Sunday, we had a relaxing Grande Breakfast Buffet in the lobby restaurant, Aura, and then checked in on our little buddy at Aunt Cindy’s. Turns out they didn’t have such a smooth night…Rocco woke up at 10:45pm refusing to sleep in the pack n’ play, slept in Auntie’s bed, woke about 2am and puked, then decided at 5am he was ready to get up for the day and go “outside!” Hmm. I think it’s safe to say we’ve burned yet another babysitting bridge. Cindy did say our little maniac was feeling better though and was happy as a clam “playing baseball” in the yard. Ever see a 2 year old play baseball? It’s amusing and adorable…his die-hard Yankees fan father has some work to do though. So we strolled down 3rd Street South and enjoyed our last few minutes as a couple over a tasty BLT and Mahi-Mahi sandwich at Handsome Harry’s Third Street Bistro before picking up little mister and heading home.
Despite my master packing lists and attempts at packing a few days in advance, I can’t help but worry as I leave the house for a trip that I have forgotten something important. Don’t you? But I always try and remind myself of something my mother always says that makes perfect sense…”Don’t worry about it. If you really need it, just buy it when you get there.” This is so true. Unless you’ve forgotten a handmade present for your best friend at her destination wedding, your ID, or ATM card, you’ll be fine. Even your prescriptions can be sent to you in another city by calling your doctor and asking them to forward enough for your trip to the nearest pharmacy. So stop stressing and start enjoying that escape you’re about to take.
Ever think to bring rubbing alcohol along on your next trip? Do it, as long as they’re alcohol wipes. Liquid rubbing alcohol will inevitably spill in your toiletry bag. Here are a few great uses for them:
- Clean your razor after every use. My grandfather, Pops, taught me that one of the reasons your razor gets dull so quickly is because of the built up bacteria on the blade. One (careful) swipe of the alcohol wipe will kill the bacteria and keep your razor sharp for much longer.
- Clean your jewelry. Fill a cup a third of the way with really warm water and set the alcohol wipe in the cup for 30 seconds, then toss the wipe away. Set your jewelry in the solution for 10 minutes (just enough time for your shower) and much of the gunk that gets trapped between and on top of those jewels will come clean. Every girl needs sparkling gems no matter where she is.
- Clean your tweezers. Yes, even those need cleaning. But be sure to rinse them off after a few minutes. We wouldn’t want to damage the polka dot paint or crystals on them. (By the way, these fun Tweezerman designs are on their way to www.arrivechic.com and will be in stock next week!)
- Sanitize a few things…the remote control, telephone, & doorknobs in the hotel room (especially the bathroom) and your cell phone are just a few things that could use a wipe down while traveling.

Travel Tip: Entertaining the kiddies
Happy Thanksgiving!
Tuesday we headed up to New Jersey from Miami for our Thanksgiving holiday with my husband’s side of the family. The trip went pretty smoothly, with our little Rocco, though it was 9 hours door to door. That would be thanks to our leaving early to avoid any frantic rushing to the flight, our slightly delayed flight, and the hour and a half rainy, bumper-to-bumper drive home. A few things got us through it happily without noticing the time:
1. Flying during our toddler’s nap time: We always try to plan flights this way. It may mean a few minutes of crankiness before he falls asleep, but once he’s out we have at least 45 minutes to ourselves and eveyone’s a lot happier afterwards!
2. The iPad: At home, we try and limit screen time each day but when traveling, Rocco gets all he wants. We make sure to load up on fun educational apps and a couple of just plain entertaining things like his latest obsession, Disney’s Cars movie. Some of our favorite apps: Interactive Alphabet by pi’ikea street, TallyTots! and AlphaTots by Spinlight Studio, and Elmo loves ABCs by Sesame Street.
3. Kumon coloring books: I love these books because they’re about mad libs size so easily fit in a carry-on pocket. Plus, when we have to turn off the iPad during take-off and landing, it’s the perfect activity with a few crayons I’ve thrown in the bag from home. My suggestion, rip out a few pages at a time or the book will be completely colored in less than 5 minutes.
4. Table Toppers: I always have these disposable plastic placemats on hand for restaurants, especially since I’ve been described as a bit of a germaphobe. But, I fell further in love with them this trip when it hit me to use one on the nasty seat back tray. Previously, I’ve used about half a package of wipes in an attempt to sanitize it. As soon as you board, stick it on the tray for the kiddies to use all flight. Rocco ate his chicken nuggets, french fries, and dip (a.k.a. ketchup) on it and then we just wiped it down for him to play on the rest of the flight. Why didn’t I think of this before?
So, to sum it up, this week’s travel tip is for traveling with kids: schedule transportation around nap time & bring an iPad (or iPhone, tablet, or DVD player), Kumon coloring book, and table toppers! And if you arrive at the airport WAY too early, find the best airport shop to waste your extra time in. We happened upon a new shop, actually it was a mega-shop, called The Shoppes at Ocean Drive in Terminal D at MIA. It is, hands down, the best airport shop I’ve ever been in. Stay tuned, more to come on this dream airport store next week.
Strip House Potatoes Romanoff
This weekend, my husband and I dined at Strip House at the Naples Grande Beach Resort in Naples, Florida. It was an amazing meal and one of the best steaks I’ve had in my life. We had dined at the Strip House in New York City previously but never had their Potatoes Romanoff. But, I’ve heard about them since my last visit so this time I was determined to try them. Good move on my part…they were divine! In fact, so delish that I had to look up the recipe…and let me tell you (as I’m sure my husband would confirm), I’m no chef. But these were so good that if I got them to taste even half as good as the ones we had this weekend, I’d be happy. I just may try them for Thanksgiving. Here’s the actual restaurant’s recipe and a photo courtesy of Williams-Sonoma:
STRIP HOUSE POTATOES ROMANOFF
Twice-baked potatoes take on bold new dimensions of flavor in a rich, creamy gratin with shallots and cheddar cheese. This dish is one of the signature sides at Strip House, a steakhouse in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The potatoes need to be baked a day in advance, so plan accordingly.
- 3 large russet potatoes, about 2 lb. total, unpeeled and scrubbed
- 3/4 cup minced shallots
- 2 1/2 cups grated white cheddar cheese
- 2 tsp. kosher salt
- 1/4 tsp. freshly ground white pepper
- 1 1/2 cups sour cream
Preheat an oven to 425ºF. Wrap each potato in aluminum foil and pierce several times with a fork. Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack and bake until tender, about 1 hour. Remove the foil and let the potatoes cool to room temperature. Place the potatoes on a plate, wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, preheat the oven to 350ºF. Using the large holes of a box grater, grate the potatoes, including the skins. Transfer to a bowl and sprinkle the shallots, 1 3/4 cups of the cheese, the salt and white pepper on top. Using your hands, gently toss the mixture together to combine, then fold in the sour cream in 2 additions. Transfer the potato mixture to a 1 1/2-quart gratin dish; do not compress. Sprinkle the remaining 3/4 cup cheese on top. Bake until the potatoes are hot and the cheese is golden brown, about 30 minutes. Serves 6.
